When choosing a research topic for the Multigenre Research Project (MRP) I had a difficult time because I have not yet decided what I want to focus on in the field of Communication Disorders. I have always been interested in the deaf culture and people who are hard of hearing. I personally know someone who is deaf and lives in Romney, WV so I have had some exposure to deafness throughout my life.
I have previously done some research on Cochlear Implants (CIs), so I already had some knowledge on the subject. After observing Amy Knell do therapy with children who have CIs I decided that I wanted to learn more about the topic. With some help I came up with the research question “What impact on vocabulary development in children does early cochlear implantation have?” I found/find it truly amazing to watch these kids in therapy. It seems very rewarding for both the clinician and most importantly the client.
With the MRP I did a webliography, poem, podcast, powerpoint presentation, journal entry, observation report, and an interview transcript. I particularly chose to do an observation report because I have actually had experience filling an observation report out about a young child with a cochlear implant. I felt like previous experience would allow me to do a thorough job with this specific genre. I hope everyone finds each genre interesting and better understand early cochlear implantation.
