Fun/Weird/Zany/Outrageous “stuff”

In our fast paced world it is hard to find time just to sit down and do something fun at the computer.  Whenever you actually have a chance to sit down and have absolutely nothing constructive you must do, go to this site and I guarantee you won’t be bored.  Here there are lots of fun games, jokes, music, quizzes, and just about any random thing you can possibly think of.  If you’re anything like me, it will keep you entertained for hours.

For those of you who are still kids at heart, or just enjoy Dr. Seuss than this site will definitely be of interest to you.  This site offers games, Dr. Seuss quotes, events, and a catalog.  Along with these things, there is a biography about the author Theodor (Ted) Seuss Geisel.

All of us have heard the sayings “don’t walk under the ladder, you’ll have bad luck,” or the number 13 is unlucky. For more old superstitions visit this site.  There are lists of bad luck superstitions, good luck superstitions, wedding superstitions, and several other categories.

Personal Interests

I have always enjoyed working out and try my best to stay healthy.  Since living in the Huntington area I spend my time working out at the local YMCA.  Along with the numerous benefits of working out, I personally find it to be my best stress reliever. The YMCA offers several different aerobics classes, swim lessons, personal training, tanning beds, and many other programs.  The hours are flexible and the benefits are endless.

Previously, my Sunday nights were reserved for the ABC show “Grey’s Anatomy.”  Now, with a new night and time, I must be home at 9:00 on Thursday nights in order to catch each new episode.  This site can introduce those of you who are not familiar with McDreamy, Mer, and several other cast members and catch you up on what you’ve missed the last two seasons.  Both season 1 and 2 are available to purchase on DVD, photos, music, and an episode guide are also available on this site. Trust me, you want to check this site out!

Of course, I must include the Marshall University Communication Disorders site.  This site offers information for students, faculty, clients, and anyone interested in the Speech and Hearing clinic or the Communication Disorders program.  Job postings, a virtual tour of the facility, undergraduate and graduate programs, and the clinic handbook are a few of the features that are available through this site.

Discipline Specific “stuff”

One of the most important associations for any speech-language pathologist or audiologist to be familiar with is the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).  This site offers professionals, students, and the general public a wide variety of information.  Anything from conferences and events to information about the profession is provided here.

Another important site for both speech pathologists and audiologists is the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).  This is a very good resource that provides information on topics such as voice, speech, language, hearing, deafness, balance, and a few others.  Additional student/teacher activity ideas are offered  along with research the NIDCD has conducted and sponsored.

Last, an important site for aspiring speech pathologists or audiologists is the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA).  NSSLHA is the national student organization for either undergraduate or graduate students interested in communication disorders.  On this site you can join NSSLHA, see what events are going on, or purchase different NSSLHA items.

Research Resources

One research resource I have always used is Google.  On this site you can search for anything from cochlear implants to the phone number to the local Pizza Hut.  This site allows you to search for scholarly articles and can often find several useful results for your search.

By using MEDLINE from EBSCOhost I can often find numerous journal articles on several different topics.  MEDLINE was created by the National Library of Medicine and offers articles on the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, nursing, and much more.  This database is especially useful for those students or professionals in the health field.

The Cochlear Implant Awareness Foundation (CIAF) site provides information, financial assistance, resources, and support for people who are interested in cochlear implants.  It is a non-profit organization founded by Michelle Tjelmeland, who herself was affected by hearing loss.  The CIAF is headquartered in Illinois and this site can help you learn more about the organization.

Extras for when you have nothing else to do

Keeping up with the local news, weather, and sports is always important.  Visit WSAZ to see what’s going on in the Huntington area.

If you need a good laugh and haven’t yet checked out the Funny Bone Comedy Club at Pullman Square, then go to this website and see who the next comic will be.  You can make reservations, see the upcoming events, or win free tickets by visiting this website.

If you ever need anything for your cell phone, PDA, MP3, camera, or printer cartridge then visit this bargain website for cheaper prices.  They carry all different brands and a wide variety of accessories.
